Words are the building blocks of language. Although individual words have their own meanings, most communication uses words in combination. Word order is a very important part of grammar. How many different ideas can you communicate by combining the following words in different ways?

Using all of the words in each sentence, you should be able to make at least eight different sentences.

Indirect object or object of a preposition?

An indirect object is very much like a prepositional phrase with the preposition omitted. Notice that the questions used to locate indirect objects include prepositions: To whom? For whom? That is why our model for the S-V-IO-DO sentence shows the indirect object suspended from the verb by an "invisible preposition." The preposition is only implied, making an indirect object.

Compare the following sentences. Although they have about the same meaning, the first one contains a prepositional phrase, and the second contains an indirect object.
